The Everlane Guide
Everlane has become one of my favorite brands to shop and be inspired by. If you've been following along with @thegoodwearblog for some time, then you've probably noticed. I've always been a brand loyalist when shopping, so when I find a company or product I love, I'll continue coming back - what every consumer does at some point in time. Everlane has been one of those brands for me, as their products, transparency and customer service continues to be extremely consistent from my first purchase in 2012, to today.
The Everlane Guide is designed to help you sort through the brand's high-quality styles, recommend and review sizing tips as well as provide personal opinions on products I love. You'll find some details on where to find great educational media and promotions to help get to know Everlane's efforts in the ethical fashion industry. Although not perfect as a large-producing company, Everlane continues to go beyond what we typically see of large retailers and for that, I commend them.
For example, the graphic below is located at the bottom of every product page to help you get to know why a product costs the amount it does. A lot goes into creating a garment and accessory - I believe this content is so helpful because with most companies, we don't have the transparency and commitment in sharing how much and why something costs the way it does.
TIPS ON PURCHASING
- Determine what type of product you want to buy and explore styles offered - Everlane typically offers numerous styles per product category (tees, pants, dresses, blouses, etc)
- Check out the Choose What You Pay under 'Featured' in the Men and Women tabs. Here you'll find loved Everlane styles that were over produced in quantities. You'll have the option to choose what price to pay at either full or discounted. You'll also see what your money will go towards with each price option available.
- If you're worried about returns, check out their detailed size sheet under each product. See advice and customer reviews on each product page on return experience and sizing recommendations - they are usually extremely helpful. When in doubt, you can always email customer service for any product advice.
- When you purchase 2 or more items, shipping is automatically free. If you're on a budget and want the free shipping, there are many accessories or cotton products that you can purchase under $30.00.
- If you're still skeptical of ordering, try out their basics tees first - where Everlane first got their start in perfecting the basic tee. See below on fit and styles.
TIPS ON SIZING
From my experience, Everlane basics like tees, v-necks, tanks and cotton long sleeves fit very true to size as the fabric is often a lighter weight with some stretch or shape that compliments many silhouettes. Their tee basics are perfect to be worn as individual items or layered with sweaters, jackets and dresses. I own a tank, vneck and long sleeve with all 3 fitting true to size.
If you want a looser fit, size up for basics.
In the few blouses I have tried, they seem to fit slightly larger and boxier than a normal size range. I would recommend sizing down, especially if you're on the shorter side like me. Most of the silk blouses are loose and comfortable // the cotton blouses and button downs range from stiffer to form fitting depending on the silhouette. Because of these altering fits, I'd recommend ordering double in different sizes depending on your preference and sending back the one that does not fit (or you can always visit their stores in San Francisco and New York!). All in all, the fabric is extremely high quality and will wear well over time through wear and washes.
These styles fit true to size and typically can be sized down depending on your style preference. I've heard many different opinions on preference for fall and winter sweaters whether you like layering with other pieces or a more form fitting look. Several sweaters Everlane sells will be longer in length and others will be boxier or cropped style - see product details and photos for more descriptions per style.
Everlane sells a variety of dresses that range in fit depending on fabric. height and silhouette preference. I've been able to try on several of their dresses and like the options available - especially for an assortment that can be worn for different occasions. From my try-on experience, I will typically be true to size for this category or size down to avoid any boxiness (if dress is described in this way). Dresses will always be a a product category, for any brand, that will be trial and error for each customer so be sure to check out their videos on each product page to see movement, length, etc.
Everlane has now released several styles of their denim and continue to get rave reviews on the quality, style and fit. I own a pair of their Mid-Rise Skinny Jean in my normal size and they fit comfortably - snug but with room to move. I've noticed through wear that the denim does loosen throughout the day - therefore for my next pair I will try sizing down to see if that can be avoided. From other product reviews, many customers recommend sizing down on their boyfriend fit as well.
One other note if you are skeptical of ordering denim online, all model measurements and seen sizes are listed with a "See how it fits on other sizes" drop down to find a model similar to you.
The pants I've been able to try on fit slightly big and therefore, I have sized down on these purchases to ensure a form fitting and more formal look to wear to work and events. Although I have not tried on many of their pant styles, the fabric and silhouettes they sell are very comfortable and wear well for multiple season (see Wide Leg Pant in loved items below).
I've been able to try on a few styles of Everlane's shoes - although I do not own any at the moment. The shoes are extremely high quality and crafted beautifully with materials like Italian leather and suede. Many of the shoes can be considered investment pieces, but seem to be ones that will last for many seasons (hopefully longer). And from my experience all shoes fit true to size, but after reading several reviews, it seems that many of the shoes fit narrow and therefore require you to size up. My recommendation is to read a few comments and make that judgement for yourself and how your shoe size typically runs!
coming soon - I'll be trying out a few of their styles in the coming weeks to give fit and style advice!
It's normal, when shopping online, to worry about reliable sizing, fit, and look. I've heard from many people that they're apprehensive about ordering from Everlane because of these factors or that they just won't like the item. From experience, the risk is worth it - and if you don't love a product, their returns process is extremely painless. Personally, I've ordered several tops that have not fit correctly. When this happens, the company provides 2 options - to either return it for a shipping cost (about $6.95 taken from the original paid price) or return it as an exchange and they provide a free ship label. For the first few returns, I paid the return shipping price. But now, I will choose to send the item back for credit as I know I'll continue purchasing other needed product or new releases.
As for their customer service... it's amazing! You will receive a response in under an hour and their team is always willing to help with anything you may need. I recently ordered a sweater that came with a tear in the material. Once I told the team what happened, they created a return label for me and automatically reordered a new sweater to ship without even having to ask. Painless process.
The Cotton V - in True Black
One of my first tee purchases from Everlane, this v-neck is a great basic that is durable in material and color when withstanding wears and washes. The fabric and stretch is perfect to be tucked in or tied in a knot over a dress or skirt. With many color options, these can be added to your minimal wardrobe or basic everyday wear.
The Wide Leg Crop Pant - in Navy
My favorite Everlane product and purchase. These wide leg pants go with everything and they have continuously been a staple in my wardrobe. They have a high waisted fit that sits snug but stretches out (in a good way) with movement throughout the day. These pants can be dressed up or down with shoes, accessories and tops. I'd recommend ordering true to size or size down for a snugger fit around the waist and bottom.
The Pima Stretch Long Sleeve - in White
I wear this long sleeve with everything through each season! It's a perfect basic top to be worn on it's own or underneath items like sweaters, cardigans and jackets because of it's fitted style. The fabric is thin, lightweight and comfortable to wear. Color tip : the white color is slightly see through.
The 100% Human Woman Cotton Box Tee in Small Print - in Muted Pink/Pink
One of my favorite purchases because of the comfy cotton tee and the social impact that comes with this purchase. The fit is extremely comfy with a slight boxier silhouette. And with each 100% Human product that's purchased, Everlane gives back to the charity, Equality Now.
The Prima Stretch Tank - in Heather Grey
A great simple tank that can be worn in the warmer seasons as well as underneath sweaters, cardigans and blouses for some added layering. The tank appears a little more form fitting in the product pictures, but does have significant stretch when wearing as well as the light weight fabric being breathable and extremely comfortable.
The Cotton Long-Sleeve Crew - in Khaki Green
This was my first sweater purchase last Fall and was impressed by the quality and fit. This crewneck sweater has a boxier silhouette while still providing a fitted shape around the shoulders and sleeves. The fabric weave is breathable and perfect for transitioning seasons.
The Mid-Rise Skinny Jean - in Mid Blue
Everlane's line of denim is high quality, ethically made, durable and affordable. The mid-rise style fits normally above the hips for a flattering silhouette with the pant tapering right above at or above the ankle depending on your height. And the color chosen for each denim wash is designed to fade naturally. I am a fan of the quality of the denim, but would size down for my next pair as they do stretch out throughout the day.
The Twill Zip Tote - in Navy
This was my first Everlane purchase back in 2012 and I still use this bag daily today. The size is perfect to carry from work with a laptop or just as a regular purse for on-the-go daily life. The bag is extremely high quality, very durable and although they no longer sell the navy, the colors offered will match with everything!
The Deep V-Neck A-Line Dress - in Black
This double v-neck dress (in front and back) is perfect to be worn as a layering piece. The fabric is medium weight with the bottom skirt coming down as an A-line style making it perfect for casual or formal wear - I typically wear this dress with a long sleeve underneath with boots or flats. Dress comes fairly true to size, but I recommend sizing up for room to layer other items.
The Cotton Collarless Belted Shirt Dress - in Navy
Available in 2 colors, this dress is an awesome option for a simple dress for any season. The cotton fabric is a breathable medium weight that sits slightly stiff on the body for a look that can transcend from work to date nights. I love the button down, shape of the sleeves and belted tie - it leaves a vibe of a fitted kimono style that is extremely comfy and easy to wear!
